About Gisborne
Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sunrise each day. Its Maori name is Turanga-nui-a-Kiwa. It is the site of the first European landing in New Zealand. Cook set foot here in 1769 and a European settlement was established in 1831. Gisborne became a city in 1955. With warm Summers and mild Winters Gisborne is one of the sunniest places in the country. Gisborne enjoys beautiful beaches, great fishing, yachting, surfing and golf along with many types of wilderness activities like rafting, canoeing, tramping, hunting and riding.
