Ikamatua is about 60 km inland from Greymouth, near the confluence of the Rough and Grey Rivers. Ikamatua is handy to many tourist attractions including Shantytown, Dolphin Watch, the Punakaiki pancake rocks, scenic Buller Gorge, and Westport. To the north is Reefton (about 20 km) and the main northern highway across the Southern Alps to Christchurch. Reefton dates to the 1860s when gold was discovered in the Inangaha Valley. Subsequently, coal was discovered in the area. Today, gold, coal, dairy farming and sawmilling all contribute to the local economy. Greymouth (10,000 population) is the main administrative centre for the area with shopping, health services, schools, numerous and hospitable hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars.
