Thames and the Coromandel Peninsula

Nestled between the coast and bush covered hills, historic Thames is known as “The Gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula”. The town is a popular destination for international visitors travelling the Pacific Coast Highway tourist route.

Thames and the Hauraki region to the south have a rich cultural and pioneering heritage. The whole area offers visitors much to see and do including camping, bird watching, horse trekking, fishing, swimming, boating, and mountain biking. Others may prefer some retail therapy, visiting art and craft studios, taking gold mine tours, visiting gardens, the cheese factory, hot pools, or the ostrich farm.

Tuscany on Thames Motel is the ideal place from which to explore the Coromandel Peninsula. Within 1.5 hours guests can drive to any part of the Peninsula. Leisurely day-trips can be made to the Rapauga Gardens, Waiau Waterworks, Driving Creek Railway and Pottery, Coromandel Township, Whitianga, Cathedral Cove, Hahei, Hot Water Beach and many other natural and historic places.

The Coast Road from Thames to Coromandel is very scenic, especially in December and January with the pohutukawa in flower. There are also numerous large kauri trees and many bush walks in nearby Kauaeranga Valley to suit all levels of fitness.
