Kawerau (population about 7000) is one of the youngest towns in New Zealand, being founded in 1953. The township was planned with plenty of parks and reserves and wide tree-lined streets.
Kawerau is renowned for its friendliness, wonderful climate, its strong Maori Heritage, and a leisurely pace of life. The town enjoys a great sense of community based on having one of the warmest average temperatures in New Zealand, the best drinking water and the only free heated public swimming pool in New Zealand. Kawerau offers affordable living with good value quality homes.
Forestry is a dominant part of the local landscape and the giant Norske Skog Tasman/Carter Holt Harvey Mills are a major employer. At the Sir James Fletcher Kawerau Museum, visitors can follow a historical journey of a log, starting with its beginning in the Kaingaroa Forest, through to processing at Kawerau, finishing with its shipping from Mount Maunganui.
The geothermal field at Kawerau has been harvested for mill processing since 1957, with the KA 21 bore considered to be the highest-producing geothermal bore in the world. Mighty River Power has just completed one power station and is now planning two more geothermal power stations. These power stations will provide over 50% of the region's electricity.
Kawerau is within easy reach of lakes, beaches, forests, major cities, and thermal areas. The Tarawera River offers excellent trout fishing, exciting jet boating, kayaking, and swimming. Other outdoor adventures include tramping, horse trekking and golf.
