Alexandra and Central Otago

Alexandra (population over 4,500) is a thriving service centre catering to the needs of local orchards, vineyards, and sheep farms. Alexandra enjoys a dry Mediterranean-style climate with hot summers and clear crisp winters.

Spring sees the famous Blossom Festival, in summer the dry hillsides are a covered with fragrant wild thyme, autumn is beautiful with yellow and gold leaves throughout the Clutha valley, and winter is all about warm fires, ice skating and curling.

Alexandra is a popular holiday destination with pleasant parks and gardens, unique scenery, close to rivers, lakes and skifields. A little further up the Clutha is the historic gold mining township of Clyde and the immense Clyde hydro dam.

There is much to see and do in the area – splendid museums and tours about gold mining, fine restaurants and cafes, squash courts, netball and tennis courts, rugby and athletics fields, bowling clubs, and golf courses in both Alexandra and Clyde. For those with a love of the great outdoors there is brown trout fishing in local rivers, water sports on nearby Lake Dunstan, horseback riding, mountain biking, and tramping on the many walking tracks through local hills.

Central Otago is New Zealand's and the world's most southerly wine region. Alexandra is a sub-region that is producing award winning pinot noir and chardonnay wines. The cold winters and hot summers, along with ideal soils, helps bring out the best in these wines and new vineyards are being planted in every suitable site.
