Ohakune

Ohakune, at the southern foot of Mt Ruapehu, adjoins the Tongariro National Park World Heritage Site. The Park also includes Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro. Ohakune is the largest town (population about 1500) on the Central Plateau and is an important service centre for local farming and forestry industries as well as carrot growing.

Mt Ruapehu is famous for its two ski areas – Turoa Ski Area above Ohakune and Whakapapa on the western flank of the mountain. Thousands flock to the area for winter snow sports and Ohakune is widely known as the aprés ski capital of the North Island.

The world famous "Tongariro Alpine Crossing" that links all three mountains in the Tongariro National Park has been described as "the best one day walk New Zealand has to offer". This area is also famous as the backdrop that became Mt Doom and Gollum's Pool in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Ohakune is the ideal starting point for many summer-time activities on and around the mountain including canoeing in the Whanganui National Park, trout fishing in local streams, numerous walks and tramps through pristine native bush, and quality golf at the Waimarino course. For mountain biking enthusiasts, the infamous "Ruapehu Downhill Ride" freewheeling from the Turoa skifield down to Ohakune is a “must do” event.
