Mangawhai Heads is located on the north bank of the Managawhai River near where it flows out into the Hauraki Gulf.
The river estuary provides a sheltered beach suitable for all the family, safe boating and a good anchorage. There are masses of sand dunes on the southern shore. Beyond the river mouth is a long stretch of white sandy beach with rolling surf. Rocky headlands at the end of the beach provide great fishing spots and the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway provides scenic views of the countryside and out across the Hauraki Gulf.
Mangawhai Heads is linked to Mangawhai Village by a causeway. Both townships have shopping centres with licensed cafes, restaurants, and liquor outlets plus art galleries and other specialty shops. The area also offers a 18 hole championship golf course, tennis, bowls, walks, mountain biking, and horse riding.
To the south is the charming river town of Warkworth and the vineyards, farmers markets, and pottery works at Matakana. To the west is the Kaipara Harbour and the fabulous Matakohe Kauri Museum with its displays that depict kauri gum and the logging of some of the world's oldest trees. To the north is Whangarei, the commercial capital of Northland, and also the Bay of Islands - the birthplace of modern New Zealand.
