Beyond the river mouth is a long stretch of white sandy beach with rolling surf. Rocky headlands at the end of the beach provide great fishing spots and the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway provides scenic views of the countryside and out across the Hauraki Gulf. Mangawhai Heads is linked to Mangawhai Village by a causeway. Both townships have shopping centres with licensed cafes, restaurants, and liquor outlets plus art galleries and other specialty shops. The area also offers a 18 hole championship golf course, tennis, bowls, walks, mountain biking, and horse riding. To the south is the charming river town of Warkworth and the vineyards, farmers markets, and pottery works at Matakana.
