Iconic Hotel Business For Sale
Kurow, Waitaki Valley, New Zealand

Kurow Hotel freehold business private sale

Everyone knows it’s "The Top Pub"

The Kurow Hotel is a historic country hotel with great character. It was built about 1880 to profit from the opening of one the first bridges to span the nearby Waitaki River.

The Waitaki River is one of New Zealand' most important power-generating rivers with hydroelectric lakes at Waitaki, Aviemore and Benmore. There is excellent salmon and trout fishing throughout the river system and on the hydro lakes. The hydro lakes also provide excellent conditions for all year boating activities.

Kurow is the main business centre for the whole of the Upper Waitaki region, and for the hydro schemes. The town is steeped in history with many heritage buildings and its own unique museum. In more recent times, new vineyards along the Waitaki Valley have produced some excellent wines, particularly pinot noir.

Popular stopping place with easy parking

The Kurow Hotel is located on State Highway 83, the main northern route to Central Otago and Queenstown. The hotel with its delicious food at affordable prices is a popular meeting place for locals and farmers. The hotel is also a favourite with visiting fishermen, hunters, and boaties as well as with tourists by the bus load.

The owner of Kurow Hotel is selling his freehold business because of changed family circumstances. This popular hotel is showing a good profit from sales of alcohol, food, and accommodation. It is the ideal size for a husband and wife partnership who want a going concern business that will trade from day one. An interest in fishing, jet boating, water skiing, shooting or outdoor sports would be an advantage.

Kurow is the gateway to Central Otago and the MacKenzie High Country

Kurow is 70 km inland from Oamaru and about 3 hours southwest of Christchurch. Kurow is also about 2.5 hours from Queenstown via Cromwell or Wanaka. About 400 people reside in Kurow with many more coming during the summer months for outdoor adventures. The Kurow Festival in late December-early January, Race Day, and the Kurow market are especially popular.

The Waitaki River is one of New Zealand's largest braided river systems. It offers excellent brown and rainbow trout and salmon fishing from late November through to April. The Waitaki River is also one of New Zealand's best jet boating rivers and it also offers good canoeing water along many of its numerous braids.

There is outstanding duck and Canada geese hunting once the fishing season ends in May. Quail and chukor are also available in season while rabbits, hares, pigs and wallabies can be shot year round.

The Kurow Heritage Centre next to the Kurow Hotel is home to the Upper Waitaki Pioneer Museum and Art Gallery.
