The company was founded by Margaret and Murray Hardy of Hamilton, in September 1986, and traded initially as Healthy Living in Collingwood Street, Hamilton.

With the first store having proved extremely successful, a second was opened in November 1991 at Westfield Shoppingtown, Chartwell, Hamilton. It, too, proved a success and in 1992 the company began to expand into a national chain. Now, as Hardy's, there are 33 franchised, owner operated stores nationwide.

Hardy's offer a full franchise support structure

Full Franchisee training is provided that includes instruction in Human Resources, Staff Training, Planning and Marketing. The Franchisor will also work with the new Franchisee, in-store.

In addition, the Franchisor provides Franchisees with proprietary products that are purchased by a specialist Procurement Team through national purchase contracts, including some exclusive products.

In return, Hardy's requires that Franchisees comply with the Company's Franchise System.
