About Rotorua
Rotorua is a tourism icon in New Zealand. It was the birthplace of New Zealand tourism, way back in the 1840s when it first attracted visitors to the Pink and White Terraces and in 1901 became the first place in the world to have a national tourism department. Today, Rotorua hosts approximately 3.0 million visitors each year. Approximately 70% of all visitors to Rotorua are of domestic origin and 30% of international origin. Of these 3.0 million visitors, approximately 1.6 million are overnight visitors and 1.4 million visit only for the day. Domestic visitors contribute most to Rotorua’s visitor numbers, but the greatest growth is from the international markets. Australia, North America, UK/Ireland and North Asia are major international markets for Rotorua.
Rotorua is the premier visitor destination in New Zealand. The area's early tourism development centred around its unrivalled geothermal and volcanic attractions, lakes and unique Maori ure. More recently, growth has been fuelled by strong international visitor growth, and has led to increased accommodation capacity and refurbishment of existing properties. All of Rotorua's major visitor attractions have also upgraded their facilities and increased their staff to meet major changes in the market, and additional upgrades are planned. A number of smaller scale attractions have also been developed, which has broadened Rotorua's visitor appeal. The recent $35 million physical transformation of the Central Business District has also had a major impact on the attractiveness of the shopping and lakefront areas to visitors.
