General Store Business For Sale
Kakahi, near Taumarunui, North Island, New Zealand

Kakahi General Store near Taumarunui is for private sale by owner

Profitable business and relaxed country living

Price on Application

Kakahi General Store is one of the few general stores remaining in New Zealand.

Kakahi General Store has been family owned since 1937 and the present owner took over the business from his father in 1956. The property is situated in the beautiful bush-clad valley of the upper Whanganui River and there are no competitors for 20 km.

Kakahi is in the central North Island, about 20 km south of Taumarunui. It is famous for its trout fishing, native bush and a relaxed outdoor lifestyle. Kakahi is close to the ski fields on Mt Ruapehu (45 minutes by car) and about the same distance from the boating mecca of Lake Taupo. This area of New Zealand offers something for everyone including fishing and hunting, winter snow sports, nature walks, tramping and hiking, jet boating, canoeing, and white water rafting.

The business sells common household necessities required by the local community and surrounding farms. The business also operates a New Zealand Post Agency and is fully licensed for alcohol sales. Each year, increasing numbers of tourists and trout fishermen come to Kakahi and there is scope to add a café or takeaway food section to the General Store.

The business comprises general store, Postal Agency and Liquor Licence

Kakahi General Store has come on to the market because the owners wish to retire. The sale package includes a freehold, established, business with no local competition and a substantial owner's home.

This is an ideal business for a couple or a family who want to enjoy all the benefits of a healthy outdoor lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle of a big city.

A family business providing for the whole community

Kakahi General Store operates from a brick and tile building (214 square metres) on 0.2 hectares of freehold land. The building has a concrete floor, iron roof, aluminium external joinery and requires little maintenance. The store is divided into retail space (130 square metres), storeroom (30 square metres) and a two car garage-storeroom (54 square metres). Internal walls are permanent-colour hardboard. There is a staff toilet and a separate office. Ample customer parking is available in front of the Store.

The Store is well laid out with aisles, floor merchandisers and steel display shelving on the walls. Stock includes:

  • drapery, stationery, toys, fancy goods
  • groceries, frozen goods, confectionary, snack foods, fresh fruit and vegetables
  • crockery, fishing gear and requirements, hardware
Groceries, hardware, household necessities, fishing gear and much more

The business is also a New Zealand Postal Agency and it operates a full liquor licence.

Kakahi General Store provides for customers who come mainly from the local community. The majority personally chose their requirements from the shelves. Others telephone their orders for the owners to assemble. The Postal Agency is an important component for the business as customers who come for their mail stay on for a chat and to buy their day-to-day needs.

Holiday makers are also important customers. There are increasing numbers of holiday homes in the Kakahi area and during summer holidays and weekends, their owners and families all patronise the Store. They also come during the winter for snow sports on nearby Mt Ruapehu.
