Wellington, the Capital City of New Zealand
Wellington, at the bottom of the North Island, is New Zealand's capital city with Parliament Buildings, Corporate and Government offices. Wellington is also home to many Embassies and Consulates. It is famous for cafes, restaurants and night life. And for its culture - the Michael Fowler Centre, the Town Hall, the restored Embassy Theatre and the Te Papa National Museum.
Wellington is the northern terminus for the Interislander Ferries that travel between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. The ferries are the preferred transport option by backpackers and budget travellers. And they stay over in Wellington to see the sights, particularly those associated with the filming of the Lord of the Rings. One famous site is just up the street from Maple Lodge on Mt Victoria.
The Wellington Region comprising Wellington plus its satellite cities of Porirua, Hutt City and Upper Hutt City has over 425,000 people.
